Default What we learnt from Jon at Kiama

Hi Folks
I sense demand for us to share our learnings from the weekend with everyone else. Rather than have it appear piecemeal around the forum, I wonder could we all add things as they occur here on this thread?
Please be patient with us folks. We have all arrived home a bit overwhelmed by the experience of the 3/4/5 days away and I for one have struggled a bit to come back to earth to a point where I could succinctly recall it all.
I will start with a few points but expect that I will add more as it comes to me. I hope everyone else might do the same.

1. I learnt from Xavier (Jon's editor who has an incredible depth of knowledge on the topic and entertained us all endlessly!) that we don't always need to know exactly what our emotional stuff is. He referred to it as archaeology. He says we don't really need to dig it all up provided that we can get to a point of letting it go regardless of the detail. Jon confirmed this idea to me. But we do have to let go, accept ourselves as we are etc

2. Jon made the point.....if it is not safe for you to be thin "then don't even talk to me about flax seeds!!". He says that emotional issues account for 90% of our problem.

3. Jon talked at length about the 'set point' and how each positive change that we make eg: control sleep apnea (the top of his list), add omega 3, listen to CD to reduce stress, visualise ideal body, run from predators etc.......each one of these changes will reduce the set point (or body weight that is programed into our brain).

4. It takes 6 months for omega 3 (if we supply them in adequate quantities every day) to get to an adequate level of saturation for our bodies to be efficient at burning fat.

Thats all for now
Much love
JEY

Trans fats and saturated fats coat our cells in a "cone of silence" so that our leptins and our insulins and other communication chemicals cannot get in and communicate with the cells.

Omega 3 will replace these impervious fats with a coating that allows transmission of all the signals our "safe" body sends out and allow us to shed the fat stored there in.

Thank you all for sharing these things with us. I will check daily because I was waiting for this. I know we know most of it but there may be some things we either forgot or just simply did not know such as the details about the "set point", very good info. Thanks again and hope to see more!!!

I have never really worked out how we work this out... I know an amount (was it 10g/day?) is recommended, but I can't work it out as per my fish oil tablets.

i asked jon if he still takes omega 3 supplements now and the answer is yes he said its important to get as much omega 3 from our food as we can but he does still supplement each day
he also occassionally takes probiotics and digestive enzymes but not on a daily basis
on the question of what is live food his reply live food is food that is raw and not cooked so raw veggies, salad , fruit and nuts and seeds are what we need to be adding to each meal
another gem was that we can visualise being chased by a predator we need to be able to feel our hearts racing and feel scared this will also work
thats all for now im sure others will add as time goes on

a friend sent this to me and i sent it to jon and got a reply......FYI.....

The US National Institute of Health classifies low intake of omega-3 fatty acids from fish as ?Generally Regarded as Safe?. However they do highlight certain fish oil side effects that may trouble some people. The omega-3 in the fish oil may increase the risk of bleeding when taken in large doses. The bleeding can take the form of strokes, nosebleeds and blood in the urine. As the fish oils seem to decrease platelet aggregation, bleeding times may be longer.

People with low blood pressure or those taking blood-pressure reducing medicines should take care. One of the reported side effects of fish oil is a reduction of blood pressure. The impact on blood pressure appears to be dose dependent.

Can you please tell me what you think about this? After I read it I thought "wow, the last time my blood pressure was checked it was lower than normal but still very good".

Hi

I would say check with your Doctor, as this is very true..
I am unsure what large doses means for yuo.
Every person is different..

Please consult with your Doctor.
Perhaps the flax seed oil is a better way for getting your omega 3.
Let me know what you think.

Warm Regards
Emma

cate if your fish oil caps are 1000mg you would take 10 a day if you are not getting omega 3 from any of your food or by adding flaxseeds flaxseed oil or chai seeds

My fish oil capsules are 1000mg so that would mean 10 capsules are required to get to 10 grams.
I count each heaped tablespoon of flaxseed as a replacement for one capsule. Don't ask me where this info came from, but somehow I've picked up this idea. So I have two heaped tbs of flaxseed(freshly ground on my breakfast and two lots of 4 capsules during each day (if I remember).

I learnt (amongst 1000s of things) that I had forgotten the run or get eaten adaptation. My interpretation of this is that it is equally important to visualise ourselves reacting to stress in flight or fight mode, rather than building up a wall (of fat) around us. I am now being chased by snakes in my visualisation - something that gets my heart pumping!!

This is where I get confused. My fish oil capsules say

Fish oil (natural) 1000mg
Containing (approx) Omega-3 triglycerides 300mg

So are they 1000mg or 300? Do I then need 35 a day? :S
