Post Deep Chills

Hello all,
I am an avid skiier and spend between 40 & 50 days on the hill every season. I've already gotten 4 days in...woohoo. There's nothing better than being out there

Anyhow, for all but two of the past 8 years I've been overweight during the season. The couple of years I was not heavy, this "deep chill" problem was not nearly as significant. After the ski day is over, my skin is terribly cold and red. And internally I have a sense of "cold" that is just freezing. It's so intense that at times I can't soothe myself, even with a hot shower. the hot tub will generally do the trick, but we don't go that often. Of course then I want to eat and drink to warm up...this doesn't help either.

So as the season is about to be in full swing, I'll admit I'm a bit scared of how I will feel out there having gained much of the weight this summer and fall, and that I'm going to want to chow down to soothe myself when the day is over. Skiiing is a beer and bar food culture yikes!

I'm also concerned that this deep chill is a sign of something physically going on with me. It didn't totally disappear when I was at my ideal weight, but it wasn't nearly as severe-very curious to me.

I also want to find a way to use this sport to kick off my flight response, although given that I spend most of my time skiing through the trees, I have to stay fully focused....don't want to break myself out there!

So now that I've rambled if anyone has thoughts suggestions feedback etc I'd greatly appreciate it!
Thanks
Julie

It may sound a bit mundane but could you have a flask of hot soup to warm up with when you come in from skiing?
I find soup is a great inner warmer and if you are concerned about what the others might say you can always tell them that it's a special soup to counteract an adverse reaction to the cold.

You should have your iron level checked. Low iron is common in women and when it happens to me I am freezing and nothing seems to warm me. taking an iron supplement for a few weeks can alleviate the problem.

Thats so true...A week ago I wrote a thread somewhere about being cold and I had to sit with a hottie really close to me and the heatpump going full tilt. I then realised that my period was due and as soon as I started taking iron and vit c supplements I started coming right and now I'm brill...
although today I was having hot flushes...(burning cheeks)...I'm 38 so don't know if menopause starts that early or not but anyway heheh thanks for confirming that for me tho

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the information.

Marie, I try to eat soups, stews and chili type things when i'm out there for a full day, warm food somewhat helps. Luckily we park where we can ski in/out from the car, so keeping a thermos in there is a great idea!

Iron, never thought about that. Do those kinds of supplements have any side effects, like constipation or anything else of that sort? Just curious what I might encounter if i try it.

Thanks,
Julie

Well with this GMethod, I'm eating more fruits and salads than I've EVER eaten before so I've not found constipation a problem and I take my Iron and Vitc tabs every day. (feeling MUCH warmer now)
Also just wondered if you have low blood pressure as that can sometimes contribute to feeling very cold. What does the Doc say?

Constipation is one of the side effects listed, however, I find the opposite is true for me. If you are following Jon's eating plan with all of the fibre and hydrating you shouldn't have anything unpleaseant to worry about.

Usually my blood pressure is normal. Sometimes quite low, however. I have ti say that I was out in single digit temps the other afternoon and I was cold, but not the super deep chill that usually comes. And I didn't crave the usual greasy, hot foods I would hae last year though! I just had a bowl of soup and some bread. So wow maybe thisnis a sign that things are really starting to change in my body. Huh!

Another thing that can cause you to be cold is iodine deficiency. So maybe try the iron first, and then if that doesn't help, try the iodine.
